DONNA DAVY

I have always been drawn to animals. Growing up, we were only allowed one animal, either a cat or dog. Because I live in the mountains of West Virginia, we have rescued most of our pets from being dumped along the side of the road. Each one has its own affinity to humans even after what might have happened before we rescued them. So, focusing on animals was not a hard decision. My paintings are a realistic representation of animals and are portraits of various types of animals. The composition and expression are particularly important to the creation of an eye-catching portrait in which the animal is meant to be the center of attention. The dramatic lighting is another element that I strive to include in each painting. In the portrait Murdock, I captured him at sunset, using the warm, natural light to bring out his expression. To get the perfect shot, I kept my camera ready while holding a steak in one hand to keep him and my other dog engaged. My intention in painting animals, especially pets, is to portray their individuality, character, and to give you a sense of their being. My works aim to pay tribute to all animals for being our best friend, work partner, and companions.
